Maxim introduces the MAX4951BE, a dual-channel buffer designed to transfer drive eSATA/SATA signals, support 6.0Gbps data rates, and has two power-saving modes to extend battery life. The device maintains the integrity of the received signal by reconstructing the full output level and reduces overall system jitter (TJ) by signal shaping. Pre-emphasis and programmable equalization circuitry can be selected to transfer signals over long distances, greatly increasing layout flexibility. The MAX4951BE is designed for applications such as notebook computers where signals need to be met by Serial ATA International: Serial ATA 3.0 version specification when transmitting through docking connectors, midplanes, and external connectors. The device is also ideal for applications such as desktop computers and servers that need to transmit signals over long distance cables and boards, and that need to compensate for PCB and eSATA connector losses.
When the integrated cable sense pin is pulled high or left floating, the MAX4951BE can enter a low-power standby mode. These features greatly reduce the supply current in mobile devices such as laptops and netbooks, saving power. To further reduce power consumption, the MAX4951BE also provides a dynamic shutdown mode that automatically shuts down the circuit when there is no input signal.
High-speed amplitude detection at the input of the MAX4951BE and amplitude suppression at the corresponding output effectively support SATA out-of-band (OOB) signaling. Input signals of 50mVP-P or smaller are detected as off and will not pass through the device output; 150mVP-P or larger signals are detected as on and will pass through the device output. This method effectively prevents the system from responding to unwanted noise while allowing the OOB signal to travel through the MAX4951BE.
All pins of the MAX4951BE feature ±8kV (typ., HBM) ESD protection to prevent damage to the device and the eSATA port. The device operates from a single 3.3V supply and operates over the commercial temperature range of 0°C to +70°C. The device is available in an ultra-small 4mm x 4mm, 20-pin TQFN package that is backward compatible with the MAX4951 and MAX4951AE.
